SSH folders

An SSH folder is a directory on a server you edit in place over SFTP. It appears in the file workspace under External Folders next to folders from the Files app, and reads and writes go straight to the server.

Set up the server

An SSH folder needs a server with a Remote folder access identity. Under Settings → SSH Servers:

  1. Add the server with its Host and Port, and confirm the host's fingerprint when asked Trust this server?.
  2. Tap + under Auths and choose Remote folder access.
  3. Enter the Username on the server and pick Key or Password. A key can be generated on the device or pasted, and may have a passphrase.
  4. Tap Test connection; it reports the home directory on success. Then Save.

The same server can also carry Git over SSH identities; the two kinds are separate, and an SSH folder only offers the remote-folder ones.

Open the folder

From the Home tab's Files card, tap … and then Open SSH Folder…, or use the sidebar's SSH button inside the workspace.

  • Authentication method: the server and identity to use.
  • Folder on the server: an absolute path, or tap the folder icon to browse the server.
  • Local folder name: what the sidebar shows. Blank uses the folder's own name.

Test connection checks the login; Open lists the folder to prove it is reachable and adds it to the sidebar.

Working in it

Files download when opened and upload when saved, on the same autosave as everything else. Rows show a spinner while the server answers. Before a save the app checks the file's timestamp on the server, and if something else changed it since you opened it, asks File changed on disk before overwriting.

Deleting on an SSH folder is permanent on the server; there is no Recently Deleted for it. Deleting a link to a folder removes the link and never what it points to. A file's Info shows its permissions (Mode) as the server reports them. Files over 8 MB are not opened, to keep the transfer bounded. Sharing a file from an SSH folder is not offered.

Not found on the server

If a file or folder is no longer at the path the app knew, the operation stops with Not found on the server. It was moved or removed since the folder was connected. Refresh the folder to see what is there now.

When the host key changes

The app refuses to connect to a server whose key differs from the trusted one, with Host key changed. If the server was rebuilt or rotated its key on purpose, open it under Settings → SSH Servers, tap Check for change, and confirm the new fingerprint. If you did not expect a change, find out why before trusting it.

Removing

Long-press the folder in the sidebar and choose Forget. The server and identity stay in Settings. A server or identity that an SSH folder still uses cannot be deleted; forget the folder first.
